KCFM is the local radio station for Hull and East Yorkshire, and each local commercial radio station in the UK has requirements in respect of its music and local content, such as news, speech levels etc. These requirements are set out in the station “Format”, a document issued by Ofcom, the UK’s radio regulator.
This Public File contains details of the elements that Ofcom regulate, such as music tracks, local news etc. It is intended to give you a better understanding of our output and what we are doing for our local community. It is relevant only to “KCFM” covering Hull and East Yorkshire 24 hours a day.
Ofcom, the Office of Communications, is the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries, with responsibilities across television, radio, telecommunications and wireless communications services. View their website here.

All local radio stations have written ‘formats’, laid down by Ofcom, that they must follow at all times. For KCFM, please click here.
Transmission: KCFM is available on 99.8FM and digital radio across East Yorkshire.
Automation: At KCFM, we make full use of broadcast playout technology in order to deliver our programmes and free up presentation staff to produce content. Programming may be left in automation for brief periods to allow presenters to undertake training and other duties (whilst they remain on site at the broadcast centre). All programming is automated under the definition used by Ofcom. Typically, daytime programming (especially at peaktimes) is recorded immediately prior to transmission.
Local production: KCFM is required to produce a minimum of 15 hours a week (not including breakfast) from the transmission area.
We currently exceed this requirement by broadcasting weekday drivetime (1500-1900) from our studios in Hessle along with some off-peak programmes.
At other times, programming may originate from our studios in Hessle, be recorded by presenters based within or outside the transmission area or be produced from Nation Broadcasting’s other UK broadcast centres in Sunderland and/or Wales.
